Close your account

Depending on the type of account you'd like to close, the quickest and easiest way is via our mobile app or Digital Banking. 

Here are the steps to close your account:

Mobile app

1. Log into the app and click on the account you'd like to close.
2. Under "My Account", scroll down and choose the "Close this Account" option. 
3. Select "continue" and complete the form. 

Digital Banking

1. Log into Digital Banking and go to "Account Summary". Select the account you'd like to close.
2. Click "View account details" at the bottom of the page. 
3. Select "If you need to close your account we can help you with this form" and complete the form.

If there are any regular payments on the joint account, or any debt to be paid off, you need to agree with the other account holder how these will be settled.

If you have a joint account that is one to sign, you can close this via Digital Banking or our mobile app.

If your account is joint and requires two signatures, you won't be able to close this online or in the app. 

You can visit us in any branch, bringing along both your debit cards or ID with you. As your account is two to sign, both of you must be present. 

If you prefer, you can also write to us at: Royal Bank of Scotland, PO Box 5612, Manchester, M61 0WN. Make sure to include your full name, sort code and account number, both signatures, a contact phone number and email address, and what you'd like us to do with any remaining balance. As your account is two to sign, remember both of you need to sign the letter.

If there is a dispute between the account holders then you can cancel the joint account mandate. Neither of you will be able to use the account until the dispute has been settled. Each of you will be held liable for any debt on the account.

We are unable to reopen any accounts that have been closed or reverse a closure once a request has been submitted. Please make sure you only request to close your account once you are sure that you want to close it. 

This depends on the type of account you'd like to close:

For a Current Account or Instant Access Savings Account:

Ensure your account balance is £0 before closing your account. Transfer any balance to another account in the mobile app or Online Banking. To find out how to do this, visit our Make Payments support centre page.

For a Fixed Term Savings Account or a Help to Buy ISA:

If you have another account held with us in your name, let us know where you'd like us to send your balance to when filling in our account closure form. 

If you don't have another account with us,  please visit your nearest branch or write to us at address below.

Please remember to include your full name, sort code and account number, your signature, your phone number and email address, and what you'd like us to do with any remaining balance. If your account is joint and needs both account holders to sign, you'll both need to add your signatures.

For a Fixed Rate ISA, we'll convert your account to an Instant Access ISA. This is done to protect your tax-free savings wrapper. You can then access your funds from your Instant Access ISA if you wish.

If you want to move your Royal Bank of Scotland current account to another UK bank or building society, please ask the other bank to carry this out on your behalf.

Please note that if you hold any savings accounts with us, they won't be moved as part of the switching service and will remain with Royal Bank of Scotland.

This depends on the account itself and who is a signatory on it:

• If the account is an Adapt Account, then either the young person (and parent if both are signatories) need to visit branch - this also applies to First Savers.
• If the account is being held in trust for the child, then the parent/guardian/trustee will need to visit the branch to close this.
• If it is a Junior ISA, then, again, all signatories would need to visit branch to close this.
• Please bring along any debit/savings account cards for the account, and a form of ID. 

Please visit your nearest branch to close your stocks and shares ISA. You'll need to bring along photographic ID.
